Everything you need to know about custom 5 gallon buckets

Custom 5 gallon buckets are injection-molded HDPE pails printed with your logo, brand colors, or product information. They carry, mix, store and ship exactly like the plain pails on a hardware shelf — but every unit doubles as packaging, merchandising, and a piece of your brand that customers keep and reuse for years. Hardware and tool brands use them as retail packaging and promo giveaways, feed and ag suppliers use them for scoops and supplements, food producers fill them with everything from pickles to frosting, and breweries and car washes hand them out as loyalty merch.

Because each run is produced to order, the right spec depends on what goes in the bucket and where it will live. This guide walks through the capacities and dimensions available, the difference between food-grade and standard HDPE, lid and handle choices, the three main decoration methods, color options, and how bulk pricing is structured. If you already know your spec, you can request a custom quote at any point.

Why go custom

A branded bucket works twice — packaging and long-life advertising

A plain white pail is invisible. A custom 5 gallon bucket printed with your logo does the same hauling and storage job while putting your brand on jobsites, in barns, garages and kitchens for years. Buckets are one of the few promo items people genuinely refuse to throw away — every reuse is another impression you didn’t pay for.

Brand that sticks around

Full-wrap or spot printing in your exact colors. Buckets get reused for tools, feed, wash kits and storage — so your logo keeps working long after the sale.

Built for real work

Impact-resistant HDPE with reinforced ribs, sturdy metal or plastic bail handles, and UV-stabilized resin options that shrug off sun, cold and jobsite abuse.

Spec’d to your fill

Pick capacity, resin grade, lid style and decoration method. Food-grade HDPE, gamma-seal lids and tamper-evident closures are all on the menu.

Capacities & dimensions

Bucket sizes: which capacity do you need?

Capacity drives everything — filled weight, shelf presence, and how the bucket gets carried. Compact 2 and 3.5 gallon pails suit retail kits and giveaways; the 5 gallon is the universal workhorse; 7 gallon buckets handle bulk feed, fermentation and oversized fills. Here’s how the standard sizes compare.

Materials & construction

HDPE built for the fill — and the years of reuse after

Our buckets are injection-molded from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) — the same tough, chemical-resistant plastic used across paint, food and industrial packaging. Reinforced rims and ribbing keep a loaded bucket from ovaling, and typical wall thicknesses of 70–90 mil balance carry strength against nesting and freight cost. If your fill is edible, choose food-grade HDPE made with FDA-compliant resin; for jobsite and outdoor duty, UV-stabilized resin keeps colors from chalking and the plastic from going brittle in the sun.

Lids and handles matter just as much as the pail. Standard snap-on lids with rubber gaskets seal tight for shipping and storage, while gamma-seal lids add a spin-on, spin-off threaded ring for fills that get opened again and again. Handles come as galvanized steel bails — with or without a comfort grip — or all-plastic bails where metal isn’t wanted near the fill.

  • HDPE body — impact-resistant, chemical-resistant, reusable
  • Food-grade or standard resin — FDA-compliant HDPE available for edible fills
  • UV-stabilized options — colorfast in outdoor and jobsite sun
  • Standard gasketed lids — tight snap-on seal for shipping and storage
  • Gamma-seal lids — threaded, easy-open access for repeat use
  • Metal or plastic handles — steel bails with grips, or all-plastic bails
Customization options

Three ways to decorate — plus lids, seals and seconds of shelf appeal

Screen printing

Ink printed directly onto the bucket wall — crisp, durable, and the most economical route for 1–3 spot-color logos on mid-size runs.

In-mold labeling (IML)

A full-color label fused into the plastic during molding. Photo-quality, 360° graphics that can’t peel, scratch off, or wash away — ideal for retail shelves.

Heat transfer

Full-color artwork bonded to the wall with heat and pressure — a strong middle ground for detailed art at quantities below IML tooling thresholds.

Lid colors & styles

Match or contrast your lid color against the pail, and choose standard gasketed, gamma-seal, or spouted lids to fit how the bucket gets used.

Tamper-evident options

Tear-strip lids and tamper-evident closures show at a glance whether a filled bucket has been opened — standard practice for food and supplement fills.

Bulk quantities

Order from a hundred pails to full pallet and truckload runs, with per-bucket pricing that drops as volume climbs.

Color guide

Bucket colors and what they’re used for

White is the default for food and retail because print pops on it, but pails mold in a full palette — for brand matching, color-coding departments, or standing out on a crowded shelf. Common picks:

WhiteFood fills, retail packaging, max print contrast
OrangeHardware, safety kits, high-visibility branding
YellowCaution kits, ag & feed, bold shelf presence
RedTool brands, fire-safety kits, promotions
BlueCar wash & detailing, water-related fills
GreenAg, lawn & garden, eco-positioned brands
BlackPremium merch, breweries, hides jobsite grime
Gray / CustomIndustrial fills & Pantone-matched runs

Need an exact match? On qualifying volumes we custom-match the pail resin and the printed artwork to your Pantone brand colors.

Bulk pricing

How custom bucket pricing works

Custom buckets are priced per unit, and the per-bucket price falls as quantity climbs. Your quote comes down to five things: capacity, resin grade (food-grade and UV-stabilized run above standard), decoration method (screen print vs. heat transfer vs. IML), lid and handle spec, and total quantity. Simple spot-color printing on standard resin is the most economical; IML becomes cost-effective as volume grows.

FAQ

Custom bucket questions, answered

What’s the minimum order for custom 5 gallon buckets?
Screen-printed runs typically start around 100 buckets, and pricing improves quickly at 250 and beyond. In-mold labeling requires higher volumes to justify tooling. Request a quote with your target quantity and we’ll show where the price breaks fall.
What sizes of buckets can you print?
We decorate standard round pails in 2, 3.5, 5, and 7 gallon capacities. The 5 gallon (~14.5" tall by ~12" top diameter) is the most popular and offers the largest standard print area; 2 gallon pails are the favorite for giveaways.
Are your buckets food-grade?
Food-grade HDPE buckets molded with FDA-compliant resin are available for edible fills, along with gasketed and tamper-evident lids. Tell us your fill when you request a quote and we’ll spec the right resin and closure. Standard (non-food) resin is the economical choice for hardware, promo and jobsite uses.
What’s the difference between screen printing, heat transfer, and in-mold labeling?
Screen printing lays ink directly on the bucket wall — durable and economical for 1–3 spot colors. Heat transfer bonds full-color artwork with heat and pressure, good for detailed art at moderate volumes. In-mold labeling (IML) fuses a photo-quality label into the plastic during molding for 360° graphics that can’t peel — the retail-shelf standard at higher volumes.
What lid options are available?
Standard snap-on lids with rubber gaskets seal tight for shipping and storage; tear-strip tamper-evident lids show whether a filled bucket has been opened; gamma-seal lids add a threaded ring for easy repeat access; and spouted lids suit liquid fills. Lid colors can match or contrast the pail.
Metal or plastic handles — which should I pick?
Galvanized steel bail handles (with optional comfort grips) are the standard for heavy fills like feed and hardware. All-plastic bails avoid metal near the fill and won’t rust in wet environments like car washes. Both are available across our capacity range.
Can you match my exact brand colors?
Yes. Printed artwork is matched to your specified Pantone (PMS) colors, and on qualifying volumes we can custom-match the pail resin color itself so the whole bucket is on-brand.
How do I get a quote?
Use the custom quote form with your capacity, quantity, fill type, colors and artwork. You’ll get per-unit pricing, a digital proof plan, and a production timeline back quickly.
