Food Grade vs Standard Buckets: What Actually Differs
It is a resin decision, not a coating
The phrase food grade gets used loosely enough that plenty of buyers assume it is a coating or a certification sticker. It is neither. The difference is in the resin, and it is decided before the bucket is ever moulded.
A food grade pail is moulded from virgin HDPE with no regrind. Standard industrial pails commonly include reprocessed material, which is perfectly good for hauling gravel and entirely unsuitable for holding a brine. Nothing you can do after moulding converts one into the other.
When you actually need it
You need food grade any time the contents touch the wall and are later consumed: brines, doughs, stocks, bulk flour, grain, hops, adjuncts, pet treats. You do not need it for tools, hardware, soil, ice melt or anything pre-packaged that never contacts the pail itself.
Seal the food grade ones
If it is wet or aromatic, pair the pail with a gasketed lid rather than a snap-on. Breweries storing hops and kitchens holding brine both learn this the same way, usually once.
You can still brand them
Compliance does not cost you decoration. Food grade pails take the same screen printing and in-mold labeling as our industrial pails, so a commissary kitchen or brewery gets branded storage without a compromise.
